Product Development for Biopharmaceutical Manufacturing Processes

Over the past 20 years, we have established ourselves as a developer and manufacturer of systems for the automated connecting and disconnecting of thermoplastic tubing. These are used primarily in biopharmaceutical manufacturing processes.

The two products currently on the market are the “Biowelder® TC” and the “Biosealer® TC”. We manufacture these devices at our company site in Schachen near Lucerne.

From Design to the Assembled PCB

Our electrical and electronics engineers create a schematic according to your requirements while simultaneously carrying out EMC analyses and safety assessments. We benefit from the experience of long-standing employees who have successfully completed many projects, particularly in the area of standards, and share this expertise.

The schematic is turned into a layout, which is then used to create a finished circuit board. Long-standing and proven partners assemble the circuit board and subsequently subject it to various inspections.

Before the assembled circuit boards – also known as PCBs – are further processed or used in our production, they can be programmed and tested in our self-manufactured test adapters at the customer’s request.

Software Development

The software required to control individual sensors, assemblies and our products, such as the BiowelderTC welding machine, is developed, programmed and continuously enhanced by Reed Electronics. Based on our platforms, we are able to develop prototypes within a short period of time and implement our customers’ ideas and requirements in order to turn them into a finished product.

In the development and design of our software platform, we place great importance on a well-thought-out user experience (UX) and a clean user interface (UI). This results in visually appealing programs that are intuitive to use and provide a positive user experience. Thanks to cloud connectivity, you can operate our software on a wide range of end devices (“Internet of Things”, IoT).

Our goal is to ensure that our software has a modular structure and can therefore be reused across a wide range of projects. For this reason, we place great importance on a clean software architecture and on testing our modules across our various platforms.

Firmware

Firmware embedded in electronic devices controls basic functions such as regulating and reading sensors and actuators or communication between different platforms. Our Software Development team develops, tests and implements firmware according to the requirements of your project.

Embedded Linux Development

Software and hardware are embedded in an embedded system and thus form a higher-level environment. Embedded systems perform tasks such as monitoring, regulating or controlling. They are responsible for signal processing and, for example, display control so that a user interface can be implemented. Our engineering department develops proprietary Reed systems or solutions tailored to your needs.

Interfaces and Connections

Electronic assemblies are linked to application software through interfaces. This connection can be established via various protocols such as LAN, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. In addition to our standard solutions, we are happy to develop custom interfaces according to your requirements.

Mechanical Development

Thanks to our experienced mechanical development team, we are able to implement and test innovative solutions and prototypes according to customer requirements within a short period of time. All components are designed and verified in CAD. Once approved, we forward the data to our manufacturing partners, who produce the mechanical parts for us in compliance with the highest quality standards.

Depending on the application and requirements, we use different technologies for manufacturing mechanical parts, such as injection molding, milling or 3D printing. The key requirements are compatibility with the forces involved, maximum possible mobility, ease of use and an optimized design for robust, durable and largely maintenance-free operation.

For Prototypes or Small Series

Injection Molding

Injection molding is generally used for plastic parts in larger production quantities and offers the advantage that even more complex parts can be manufactured cost-effectively in a wide variety of designs. For this purpose, an injection mold must be designed and produced once. We have many years of experience in this field and can rely on proven partner companies and suppliers.

Milling and Turning

Machining processes are used when high-precision series or prototype parts made from various materials are required. The components are manufactured and measured by proven suppliers according to our drawings. Our partners and suppliers have large and modern machine parks, some of which are used exclusively for Reed Electronics.

3D Printing

This manufacturing process is particularly suitable for prototypes or small series. Thanks to the flexibility of 3D printing and the ability to produce components in-house at short notice, concepts or test setups can be assembled quickly and easily and used for testing. 3D printers have become an indispensable part of our development department.

The importance of strong partnerships is demonstrated by the example of a customer whose production came to a standstill during a materials crisis. One of our partners, a two-person company specializing in milling and turning parts, did everything possible to enable the production of the required sensors. Within just a few days, the pilot series had been produced, the mechanical parts delivered to our production facility, and the complete units, including electronics and testing, were handed over to the visibly surprised customer.

Project Phases

Initialization

Receive the project order and requirements specification from the customer and clarify feasibility. Create an internal URS (customer requirements) and set up the risk management file.

Preliminary Study

Develop solution concepts, carry out risk management, create functional prototypes and test concepts, and – if necessary – conduct patent research.

Concept Development

Implement the concept, create the detailed design and produce fast prototypes. If necessary, repeat the patent research, check the prototype for patent infringements and file possible patents.

Implementation

Finalize the design and create tools, test adapters and production workstations. Implement the design transfer and conclude quality assurance agreements with any suppliers.

Introduction – Completion – Support

Optimize production processes and approvals, produce the first series and deliver it to the customer. Finalize the documentation and design transfer as well as lifecycle management, product optimizations, technical support and training.
