Operating Principle of the Miniature Float Switch: Reed Contact Technology

The miniature float switch from Reed is based on a proven principle: the combination of a reed contact and a magnetic float. The float moves along a guide tube and contains a magnet. When the float reaches a certain fluid level, the magnet activates the reed contact located inside the housing. Depending on the design, this either closes or opens the electrical circuit.

The key feature: the reed contact is hermetically sealed and operates entirely without physical contact. This makes the switch highly resistant to external influences such as moisture, dust or aggressive media.

The miniature float switch is manufactured in Switzerland with the highest precision and in compliance with strict quality standards. Each unit undergoes 100% final inspection to ensure that only flawless switches leave the factory, reliable in the long term.

Maintenance-Free and Wear-Free Design

One of the main advantages of the mini float switches lies in their simple yet robust mechanical design. The only moving part is the float itself—additional mechanical components or complex sensor systems are deliberately avoided.

This makes the miniature float switch not only extremely reliable but also completely maintenance-free and wear-free. Once installed, it operates continuously and stably, without recalibration or software configuration. No programming is required, and the sensor is ready for immediate use.

In addition to high reliability, the clear, modular design also allows for quick integration into existing systems—whether in standalone applications or as part of complex machines or assemblies.

Sizes, Materials and Variants of the Small Float Switch

The Mini float switches from Reed Electronics are not only characterized by their compact design, but also by their high variety of versions. Different sizes, materials and connection options enable precise adaptation to almost any application.

Mechanical Connections & Sensor Lengths

Our mini float switches are available with various mechanical connection threads, including G 1/8″, G 1/4″, and PG7. These variants allow flexible integration into a wide range of container shapes and systems. An optional matching locknut is available to further facilitate installation.

Sensor lengths range from 30 mm to 63.5 mm, covering a broad range of applications—especially in smaller tanks and tight enclosures.

Float and Tube Dimensions

Float diameters vary between 16 mm and 27 mm, allowing precise adjustment to the medium being measured and the available installation space. The guide tube along which the float moves has a diameter of 8 mm.

Material Selection

To meet the different requirements of various media, Reed offers the small float switch in a wide range of material combinations for both housing and float:

  • Mechanics: PVC, PP, PVDF, stainless steel (V2A), brass
  • Float: PVC, PP, PVDF, stainless steel (V2A), Buna (NBR)

This variety allows for use in chemically demanding, hygienically sensitive, or cost-sensitive environments. By selecting specific materials, temperature and pressure resistance as well as media compatibility can be individually optimized.

Electrical Properties and Switching Functions

In addition to their mechanical flexibility, our float switches also stand out for their well-designed electrical properties. They provide reliable switching functions in a compact form and can be individually adapted to the application, ranging from simple signal output to versions suitable for 230 V mains operation.

Switching Capacity & Mini Float Switch with 230 V Option

The miniature float switches from Reed Electronics AG are rated for a maximum switching power of 10 W. By default, they support voltages up to 25 V AC or 50 V DC, which is sufficient for many standard control and signaling applications.

For specific requirements, such as in industrial environments with higher voltages, 230 V AC variants are also available. This version is suitable, for example, for directly triggering relays or actuators in low-voltage systems.

The choice of the appropriate electrical version depends on the specific application and system requirements. On request, Reed Electronics also offers custom configurations, for example, with specific connectors, cable lengths, or integrated protective elements.

Contact Types NC/NO and Switching Capability

The mini float switches are available as normally closed (NC) or normally open (NO) versions. The switching function can be changed simply by rotating the float body, a practical feature that offers flexibility in planning and installation.

This switching capability allows one product type to implement different switching logics, such as level warning at minimum level (NO) or overflow protection (NC).

This makes the mini float switches not only simple but also extremely versatile solutions for liquid level detection, with no need for complex software adaptation or parameter configuration.

Internal Mounting & Installation Orientation

The mini float switches are designed for internal mounting inside the tank. Thanks to their slim design and compact sensor lengths, they can be installed even in confined spaces without difficulty.

The installation position is flexible: the switch functions reliably up to an inclination of 30°. This is beneficial for applications where precise vertical mounting is not possible. This tolerance expands the range of use and facilitates integration into various system environments.

Custom Connectors and Cables

Our miniature float switch also offers maximum flexibility in terms of electrical connection.

Various connection options are available:

  • Fixed cable connection
  • Plug connection
  • Special connector types according to customer specifications

Numerous cable options are also possible, including PVC, PUR, silicone, Teflon, or FEP—allowing optimal adaptation to environmental conditions and chemical or thermal stress.

Cable length can be freely selected or preassembled upon request, significantly simplifying installation and saving time during setup.

Options and Special Versions

In addition to standard versions, Reed Electronics AG offers a range of special versions that tailor the mini float switch even more precisely to specific applications. Whether for explosive environments, hygiene-critical use cases, or additional functions such as temperature monitoring, the modular sensor solution can be flexibly adapted to individual requirements.

EX Version for Explosive Environments

For use in explosive environments, such as in the chemical industry, refineries, or storage of flammable liquids, Reed Electronics offers a special EX version of the mini float switch. This variant meets all relevant safety requirements and is suitable for zones where ignition protection is crucial.

Despite the added safety features, the design remains compact and operation just as simple as the standard version.

Food-Grade Version (Electropolished)

In hygiene-sensitive industries such as food or beverage production, smooth, easy-to-clean surfaces are essential. Reed offers an electropolished stainless steel version specifically developed for such environments.

Thanks to the fine surface treatment, residue adhesion is minimal, simplifying cleaning and supporting hygienic standards.

Integrated Temperature Monitoring

For added functionality, float switches can optionally be equipped with an integrated temperature sensor (PT100 or PT1000) or a temperature switch. This allows both level and temperature to be monitored using a single, compact component.
